Rethink Theft Protection
As technology continues to expand in the vehicles we sell, the processes that guide us in our daily tasks and the overall customer experience in dealerships, a recent Automotive News article highlights how thieves are adapting and using technology to break in and steal vehicles. “Thieves could be using a new technology to break into and drive away with vehicles that have push-button ignitions without a trace of evidence, and there might not be much that potential victims can do to prevent it. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) said that it obtained and tested a so-called ‘mystery device’…”
There was a time when menu selling was a new idea. It was catching on rapidly in the industry as a non-confrontational approach to presenting the growing number of protection options available to F&I customers. While the change proved somewhat difficult for veterans to grasp onto, there was one behavior that was especially tough to change; drawing conclusions on a customer’s willingness or ability to purchase based on first, often visual only, impressions…otherwise known as “Prejudgment.”
The following article by Wards Auto tells the story of three recent car dealership customers and their treatment based upon appearance. The lessons learned here go beyond the showroom and can prove very valuable in the F&I office as well. The story illustrated lost car sales in a single situation, but think of the potential impact on your monthly, quarterly or annual performance should you partake in prejudging customers…not to mention your income. Remember, the way somebody looks and speaks will not always be a valid predictor of their ability or willingness to purchase. Treat everybody equally, follow your process and reap the rewards.
